As water reflects the face so one’s life reflects the heart

As water reflects the face so one’s life reflects the heart

Sounds simple and obvious, but the implications of this straight forward proverb are profound.

When you look into a reflective surface, like water or a mirror, it gives you a reflection of yourself that is a perfect replica of you looking into it. It doesn’t represent you, or hint at what you look like – it’s like an unedited photo, completely and 100% a reflection of you.

It’s the same with our heart and lives. Our hearts are reflected in the physical and tangible out-workings of our lives – the way we live is an exact replica of what fills our hearts. Where we give our time, what we put our hands to, how we spend money etc all testify to what has taken up residence within us.

What arrests our hearts (good and/or bad), directs our lives.

Proverbs 4:23 says, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” If you’re not happy with what’s happening in your life right now, the solution isn’t found in DOING things differently to activate change, but in BELIEVING and THINKING differently.

For example: After I had my second child, my body changed dramatically and I began to have negative feelings towards it. Self loathing made me tired and depressed. I barely had the energy for my kids let alone exercise. It was a stressful season for me on many fronts, and most of my beliefs and feelings around myself were negative and hurtful. It wasn’t until I started to change what I believed about myself that physical change started to happen around me. I began to fill my heart with love for myself, and reminded myself of God’s love for me… and this spilled out from heart and into the practical out-workings of my life.

Keep watch over your heart, guard what goes into it and occupies it. What takes hold in your heart will have a direct impact on your life. It’s simple and powerful all at the same time.

If you are unsettled about life, first look to your heart not your hands, and ask yourself what are you believing and thinking that is leading your life down this path. AND remind and fill yourself up with what GOD thinks and believes about you.

To change your life, change what’s in your heart.
